Weekly Meeting substitution July 25, 2018

Today’s meeting was cancelled as many would not be available for our breakfast meeting as Dean Young & Bill Walters were speaking at Palmer Kiwanis’ meeting and several others were on vacation. So Bill alerted the “regulars” to our usual morning meeting to consider joining with Palmer Kiwanis. There were a total of 5 members at Palmer’s meeting. Dean Young did a presentation about programs that the Boys & Girls Club of Easton are doing to reinforce kids’ education during their “summer vacation.” He explained about the problems developed to help offset “Summer slide” which is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. And Dean and Bill further explained about the Easton Kiwanis’ Playground & Gardens project that several of the Palmer members recently attended when the ground-breaking was held. Dean and Bill discussed how it got started. Why it got started and where it stands financially now.  As Dean pointed out, we’re less than $5000 away from reaching our $290,000 goal. Bill also gave Palmer some “knowledge-bites” about their upcoming 50thclub anniversary in a few years. His suggestion is start a planning committee NOW. Bill also made a pitch for our program next week when, hopefully, one of our own, James Owen is the speaker. I’m not sure if he is coming with the knife in his mouth or not. Its always a special treat when one of our own members provides a program about something they themselves are passionate about. I’m not sure what “Terminator-Felonious-Captain-Iron Butt” James will be telling us about himself. That is if he’s not “up in the air” flying one of the United Airlines Boeing 777’s. So put Wednesday August 1stat noon at the Pomfret Club on your “to do” list.
